New Chum Press:
Geoff and Christine Hocking created the imprint 'New Chum Press' in 2001 as a vehicle for publishing 'boutique' titles
that would never see the light of day if taken to any large publishing house.
Four books have been published under this
imprint:
'Early Castlemaine. A Glance at The Stirring Fifties';
'The Red Ribbon Rebellion. A Decade of Dissent';
'Castlemaine – From Camp to City' (Second edition)
and 'It's Another World Record. Album Cover Art'.
Each book fits the 'boutique'
niche perfectly — a highly desirable product designed for a small market. The often esoteric titles that the big publishing houses don't see a market for — that is just the kind of book that we create — and then take it to our market. With small print-runs, all production in-house and a dedicated readership for this kind of book — we believe that we can reach our own market.
About the author/publisher:
Geoff Hocking worked in the studio of World Record Club for two years from 1966 to 1967.
Like many other young WRC designers it was his first job after art school, and it was a great opportunity to be a part of the exciting milleau of artists who came in and out of the studio led by founding Art Director Geoff Digby (AGDA Hall of Fame 2008).
After WRC Hocking worked in the studio of EMI's subsidiary 'Music for Pleasure' in London, and on return to Australia in 1975 freelanced for record producers including: Fable, Hammard, Image, BMG and EMI for many years, designing hundreds of covers.
Geoff has also lectured in graphic design and illustration for the past 20 years, first at Swinburne [the alma mater of many WRC designers] and later at La Trobe University, Bendigo. Over that time he has written extensively on Australian social history and illustrated many books for children.
This is his twenty-eighth book and the fourth for New Chum Press.
Christine Hocking manages the essential business side of New Chum Press and images & words p/l.
Christine operated
The Castlemaine Bookshop for ten years after the family moved back to the country and today works part-time for the XXXX Antiques Complex,
in Castlemaine which specialises in high-quality European antiques, collectables and 'automobilia'.
